COBRE Phase 2 Project 2: Jingyu Liu //
Combined effects of SNPs and CNVs on brain structure in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
Principal Investigator: Jingyu Liu, PhD, Assistant Professor, MRN
Mentors: Nora Perrone-Bizzozero, PhD (UNM Neurosciences) and Jessica Turner, PhD (MRN)
Consultants: Godfrey Pearlson, MD (psychiatry, expert in imaging and genetics of SZ and BP) and Nik Schork, PhD (psychiatry, expert in genetic basis of complex traits and diseases)
Project 2 will utilize advanced multivariate approaches to study the effects of genetic variation on the neural basis of SZ and BP. Dr. Liu will use a hierarchical approach to leverage large-sample genomic studies (on over 40K subjects) and specific genetic neuroimaging association studies (on over 800 subjects). She has considerable expertise in imaging genetics and has pioneered a novel approach called parallel ICA, which will be used in her project5,6. Using a unique method, Dr. Liu will utilize aggregated genetic contributions from multiple interactive single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) or copy number variations (CNVs) to identify linked brain
