Maryam Alsameen, PhD

Dr. Alsameen is a Research Scientist. Her work focuses on advancing the understanding of brain organization and dysfunction through multimodal neuroimaging. She integrates magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional MRI (fMRI), diffusion MRI, magnetoencephalography (MEG), electroencephalography (EEG), and neurocognitive assessments to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying neurodevelopment, cognition, and brain connectivity.
Her research program is centered on identifying neuroimaging biomarkers of brain dysfunction across the lifespan, with a particular emphasis on neurodevelopmental disorders. Her work combines advanced neuroimaging, electrophysiology, and behavioral assessments to characterize alterations in brain structure, function, and neural communication that underlie cognitive and behavioral outcomes. Her current research examines the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on brain development and investigates the role of sleep in cognitive function, with the goal of identifying modifiable neurophysiological mechanisms that may inform future interventions.
Before joining the Mind Research Network, Dr. Alsameen completed postdoctoral training at the National Institute on Aging (NIH), where she investigated age-related changes in cerebral white matter using diffusion MRI. She earned her PhD in Physics from the University of Cincinnati, where her doctoral research examined the effects of chronic sleep restriction on adolescent brain function using functional MRI.
Dr. Alsameen’s long-term goal is to develop clinically meaningful neuroimaging biomarkers that improve the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders, ultimately advancing precision medicine approaches that improve patient outcomes across the lifespan.
