WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Senator Pete Domenici announced today that he expects a $237,990 research grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse awarded to the Mind Research Network (MRN) in Albuquerque to help improve understanding of cocaine addiction behavior.
The funds, announced by the Department of Health and Human Services, will support the research project entitled “Error Detection and Error Awareness in Incarcerated Cocaine Dependent Individuals.” The grant project period will extend through March 2009. “The Mind Research Network has projects to better understand drug addiction behavior,” said Domenici. “Research going on at MRN is a necessary component of our battle to decrease dependency on dangerous substances by understanding their causes and effects on the brain.” The award represents the latest in a series of grants provided by HHS for MRN brain research. Last August, MRN received over $250,000 for similar research into cocaine addiction. To date, the institute has received funding awards worth over $7 million to expand its research concerning neuroimaging and addictions. Additional research at the institute focuses on mental illness, neuroscience, aging and other brain-related research. Domenici is a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Last month, he announced his request of $4 million in FY2009 for a new 10,000 square-foot expansion Neuroimaging Facility at MRN.
