Dr. Weisend investigates the neurophysiology of normal memory and cognitive dysfunction and has done clinical and research work on epilepsy, using magnetoencephalography (MEG) to localize the exact areas of the brain where the epilepsy originates.

He is one of only a few experts in the nation able to identify and so specifically define the location of epileptic seizures to allow for the most challenging and precise surgeries to alleviate the symptoms.

Realistic Simulations and Empirical Data: MEG Reconstructions of Time (NIH/NIMH)
This project will test versions of the most popular MEG source reconstruction algorithms using realistic simulations and real data collected on the same subjects on each of the three major MEG machines to determine the source localization accuracy and more importantly the ability of these algorithms to properly model the timing of the activity. It is designed to help provide a comprehensive test of MEG algorithms as well as test data sets that can be used to test new algorithms in hopes of allowing MEG investigators to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of the various algorithms currently available.

Atomic magnetometer for human magnetoencephalography (Subcontract: Sandia National Laboratories)
In magnetoencephalography (MEG) the magnetic fields produced by neural currents in the brain are measured. Being on of the few non-invasive techniques for measuring brain activity with high temporal fidelity that also allows spatial localization of neural activity, MEG is a critical tool for furthering our understanding of brain function and the physiology underlying human cognitive processes. Low-temperature  superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) have long been the only sensors capable of  making high quality MEG measurements. Although SQUIDs have been and invaluable research tool for  MEG, they do have significant limitations. The largest is that they require cryogenic cooling (liquid helium).  This leads to device of considerable size, and the constraint of an available source of liquid helium, limiting  the possibility of eventual miniaturization and portability. We propose build a magnetometer based on the  spin precession of alkali atoms for MEG applications.

Fundamental Mechanisms of Neural Plasticity in Visual Cortex (MRN Internal Funding)
This project examines the test/retest reliability of visual responses as a function of stimulus repetition. This  project uses the existing MIND MEG consortium and DARPA datasets to evaluate the hypothesis that changes in the response of the brain to repeated stimuli is the result of plastic change in the synaptic potentials giving rise to the visual response.
